From solutions for workflow management, to multi-million pound data network projects, the last thirty years have varied greatly in customer, scope and requirements, across nations and industry sectors.

Since moving to Spain from the UK in 2015, life has changed from practical implementation of projects, to learning and research through my personal vehicle, Codioma.

Find out more about me, how we can collaborate on projects and research, particularly those involving education and technology.

Data Systems

The strategic application of data architecture has been central to my technical and leadership roles since 1997. Managing end-to-end data lifecycles requires bridging the gap between low-level transport infrastructure and high-level analytical modeling.

Core Data Disciplines

  • Data Transmission & Transport: Decades of hands-on expertise in the routing, switching, packet encapsulation, and administration of mission-critical data across high-availability enterprise and service-provider networks
  • Data Collection & Cleansing: Auditing legacy schema, normalizing disparate sources, and turning brittle manual reporting into automated ETL pipelines and self-healing ingestion workflows.
  • Data Analysis & Intelligence: Transforming telemetry, logs, and business datasets into clear operational models, capacity forecasting frameworks, and executive visibility dashboards.
  • Governance & Integrity: Implementing strict schema validation, cryptographic checksums, role-based access control (RBAC), and compliance audits across multi-tenant storage environments.

Systems Architecture Philosophy

1. Ingestion & Normalization

Unstructured data from distributed nodes is systematically verified at the edge. By standardizing input structures early, downstream pipelines remain performant and resilient against drift and corruption.

2. Automated Pipeline Orchestration

Manual data handoffs introduce human error and latency. Automated workflows monitor pipeline health, retry failed state transitions, and enforce schema integrity across cross-functional operations.

3. Observability & Telemetry

A data system is only as reliable as its observability layer. Structured logging, metrics collection, and automated threshold alerts ensure immediate visibility into bottlenecks and network anomalies before they impact end-users.

Key Tooling & Methodologies

  • Processing & Scripting: Python, Bash, SQL, Perl
  • Storage Paradigms: Relational Databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL), Document Stores, Structured JSON
  • Data Delivery: REST APIs, Structured Payloads, Real-time WebSockets, Microservice Bus Architectures
  • Integrations: Telemetry parsing, automated configuration generators, network event correlators
Service FrameworksSystems

Service and Delivery Frameworks

Sustainable technology operations depend on robust governance frameworks[cite: 4]. Over two decades, I have applied systematic management standards to eliminate delivery bottlenecks, reduce operational risk, and align technology solutions with business objectives.

  • IPQP (In-Process Quality Planning): Led the successful rollout of the IPQP audit framework and created data networking service standards for Eli Lilly throughout the EMEA region (1999–2000).
  • ITILv3 Certified (2012): Practitioner-level execution of Service Strategy, Service Design, Service Transition, and Service Operation in enterprise ITSM.
  • TOGAF 9.2 Certified (2012): Level 1 & Level 2 certified enterprise architect, applying structured blueprints across Business, Data, Application, and Technology domains.
  • PRINCE2 Practitioner (2011, 2016): Structured project management governance delivering complex infrastructure on time and within scope.
  • Scrum Foundation (2020): Agile iteration, sprint planning, and backlog stewardship for collaborative engineering teams.

Quality as an Operational Mindset

True quality is not a post-deployment inspection step—it is an upstream operational discipline. Whether structuring multi-vendor contracts, deploying automated provisioning toolsets, or establishing team workflows, building quality at the source produces resilient operations and high service predictability.

Case Studies in Quality Management

1. Eliminating Service Provisioning Defect Rates

  • Situation: Client connectivity provisioning was plagued by configuration errors and communication bottlenecks across distributed departments. Over 10% of new service installations were failing, causing SLA penalty payouts, revenue leakage, and client dissatisfaction.
  • Task: Overhaul the entire delivery pipeline, eliminate configuration defects, and protect contractual SLAs.
  • Action: Assumed full end-to-end accountability for the provisioning lifecycle. Standardized handoffs between Sales, Procurement, PMO, and Engineering. Replaced manual device configuration with automated pre-validation scripts.
  • Result: Reduced provisioning defects to near-zero while scaling throughput from tens to hundreds of live circuits daily. The improved workflow was later adopted as the operational blueprint across the entire parent corporation following an acquisition.

2. Internal Talent Pipeline Development

  • Situation: External technical recruitment cycles were slow, costly, and frequently resulted in poor cultural and operational alignment.
  • Task: Establish an internal capability academy to identify, retrain, and promote high-potential staff from non-engineering departments.
  • Action: Identified high-aptitude personnel in customer operations, built a structured training incubator, and mentored them through practical network engineering curricula.
  • Result: Three non-technical team members transitioned into full-time network provisioning roles, achieved Cisco certifications within 6 months, and vastly improved team morale. One candidate advanced to a career as a systems analyst at Cisco Systems.

3. Overcoming Contractual Silos in Multi-Vendor Deployments

  • Situation: A critical infrastructure milestone was delayed when a subcontractor failed to supply server engineers. Existing contracts strictly partitioned responsibilities, preventing available Brocade network engineers from touching integrated IBM blade systems, stalling the entire implementation.
  • Task: Resolve the contractual impasse and restore project momentum without violating procurement boundaries.
  • Action: Leveraged an upcoming contract renewal window to restructure engagement terms directly with the lead contractor, consolidating multi-vendor engineering authority under a single umbrella.
  • Result: Configured and integrated the stalled IBM blade chassis and networking modules directly, removing the project bottleneck and delivering the project on schedule.

Education and Training

Sharing technical mastery and mentorship has been a core commitment throughout my career[cite: 5]. What started as internal training programs for engineering and operations teams has evolved into a dedicated pedagogy covering computational thinking, data systems, and applied languages.

The Codioma Way

The Codioma Way is a platform, approach, method and materials for simplying learning into bite-size components.

No terms or jargonistic language is assumed until is has been explicitly defined beforehand.

Each sentence is self-contained, an explanation that logically builds on the previous sentences.

The objective is to avoid verbosity where meaning can be lost in convoluted phrases or paragraphs.

This is the process I have been applying for some years, to help decipher difficult texts.

I have often found the complexity of an idea comes from the style of writing used to describe it.

The Codioma Way suits a digital form such as a blog rather than physical text.

This is the preferred way that Codioma Way presents its material, taking advantage of digital interactivity.

The first courses using The Codioma Way will be released later in 2026, on the Codioma Way platform.
